Charles Normandale designs and makes sculpture and architectural metalwork for the private, public and corporate sectors.
As a leading artsmith working from Wheely Down Forge in the Meon Valley, Hampshire, Charles produces innovative, bespoke, site specific metalwork for interior and exterior spaces in hot forged mild steel, stainless steel and bronze. He is renowned for inspirational, high quality work with superb detailing and substantial build quality.
Work is designed, made and installed to the highest engineering standards by his fully equipped forge team.
Recently, he was commissioned to design and produce the external railings, entrance and pedestrian gateway for the Local Authority new build, Fullerton Place at Portswood in Hampshire.
Hot forged, patinated, stainless steel bars hold and support in tension, steel wave-like forms that flow and ripple along the boundary wall, cascading in arching crests over the pedestrian entrances, Charles' signature use of large punched riveted connections as artistic detail link the mild steel elements and complete the work.
This contemporary sculptural interpretation plays a dual role. It fulfils its purpose as a safe and functional external railing while its sculptural presence complements the architecture and enhances the local environment.
This artistic touch has resulted in a wide range of unique and challenging contemporary works.
