Plans To Be Unveiled For Memorial At City Cemetary In Belfast

Construction News Image
Belfast City Council has announced that an information session is to take place to discuss plans for a memorial at the City Cemetery.

Proposals for the memorial, to those buried in Memorial Plot Z1, will go on public view for the first time next week.

Artist Chris Wilson will present his plans at the session in the City Hall on Tuesday, 30 May.

Memorial Plot Z1 is an area in City Cemetery that has been used as a public grave for the burial of both adults and babies. The babies buried there were still born or died shortly after birth, and the hospital or social services took responsibility for the burial. The last burial in the plot was in 1996.

Whilst the council has records for all the babies who are buried within this plot, no one individual owns specific graves and therefore there are no individual headstones or memorials.

In 2015, the Council received a request that a permanent memorial be placed to mark the plot and the babies and adults who are buried within it. Council subsequently agreed to provide up to £50,000 to fund a permanent memorial. A consultation exercise took place in late 2015 and early 2016, in which around 300 people participated.
