Taoiseach Accused Of Trying To Block Energy Efficiency Fund

Sinn Fein has accused Taoiseach Enda Kenny of ordering Fine Gael MEPs in the EPP group to vote against a move which would have seen the ring fencing of €5 billion from the Junker Investment Plan.

Deputy Michael Colreavy, Sinn Féin Spokesperson on Communications, Energy and Natural Resources said the Taoiseach's attempt to block the move raises questions as to their commitment to renewable energy and energy efficiency in Ireland.

He said: "Currently, Ireland imports the vast majority of its energy from fossil fuels.

"It is a situation that is not sustainable into the future and has to be challenged on two fronts.

"Firstly, sustainable, renewable energy needs to be developed in Ireland.

"Secondly, energy efficiency needs to promoted and developed.

"Energy efficiency in buildings allows for the retrofitting of domestic, commercial and industrial properties so that their overall energy use is reduced.

"Energy efficiency in transport supports the promotion and investment in fuel efficient vehicles that are essential for Ireland to reach its commitment on carbon emission reductions."
