The grants have been allocated under the Local Authority Swimming Pool Programme energy efficiency upgrade and enhanced disabled access initiative 2015.
In 2011 €10.94 million was allocated to 56 pools under an energy upgrade and enhanced disabled access initiative. A further €3.36 million was allocated in 2012 under the initiative. Under the 2015 round of the initiative all eligible pools applying which had not previously received an allocation under the initiative have been allocated grants.

Minister of State for Tourism and Sport Michael Ring T.D, said: "I am delighted to be in a position to approve the grants for such worthwhile projects. Since coming in to Government I have allocated more than €14 million to swimming pools to improve energy efficiency and to enhance disabled access. This has enabled swimming pools to reduce their energy costs and provide improved access for disabled swimmers and I am very happy today to be in a position to assist a further 16 pools."
