Longboat Quay Residents Could Face Eviction

Construction News Image
Almost 900 residents living in the Longboat Quay are in Dublin face eviction if they don't pay the money to carry out fire safety works.

Sinn Féin Deputy Leader Mary Lou McDonald is accused the Taoiseach of being "unwilling" to intervene directly.

Speaking during Leaders' Questions in the Dáil today, Deputy McDonald said: "Taoiseach, last week I asked you to personally intervene on the issue of fire safety works at Longboat Quay. I asked you to contact Bernard McNamara directly to ensure that he and those responsible for the lack of adequate fire safety at Longboat Quay footed the bill.

"And since last week the situation for the 900 residents has gotten worse. They now have 25 days to start the works or they will be evacuated. They have been told by Dublin City Council management that the Council will not be able to house them if they are evacuated.

"The offer of additional funding from the Dublin Docklands Development Authority has been rightly rejected by the residents as unacceptable. They have 25 days to come up with millions of euro. Taoiseach, you and I both know that that is neither possible nor fair.

"Bernard McNamara and the people he employed are responsible for these apartments. It is not acceptable that residents spend every night living in fear of fire or evacuation while Mr McNamara goes on rebuilding his development empire."
