About Hand Built Designs
Hand Built Designs specialises in bespoke kitchens and occasional furniture.
The company was established in 1998 by Mark Hand, a qualified Fine Art Sculptor with a background in Film & Television Art departments and prop making. Working on numerous period interior film sets in the U.K. ignited his interest in furniture. On returning to Ireland, following a period working with a master instrument maker, Mark took on furniture commissions.
The company is based in a purpose built studio/workshop located by the shores of Lough Corrib, just twenty minutes North of Galway City.
Products
Each piece of furniture is custom designed and executed entirely in solid wood. The furniture is characterised by its simple clean lines and emphasis on practicality and functionality.
All Cabinets comprise:
Cherry, Chestnut, Maple, Walnut, Red, White and Pippy Oak and Ash are amongst the hardwoods offered. These are sourced from environmentally sustainable supplies.
Liaison with and management of the electrical and plumbing trades is offered for all kitchen projects. The full range of Siemens domestic appliances and Franke sinks and taps are carried.
Design Process
Much effort and time is devoted to the design process. Each project begins with a consultation lasting a minimum of two hours. Here the client’s needs and preferences are fully explored. Based on this consultation, the client is then presented with a comprehensive set of hand-drafted plans.
Following an on-site visit, possible changes are discussed and plans amended. The design remains fluid right until the project enters the construction phase. At this point, a schedule of work is agreed with the client. Delivery, or in the case of a fitted kitchen, installation follows.

- Solid pine carcass with easily adjustable shelves
- Solid pine drawers with birch ply base on soft-closing full-extension spring-loaded steel runners.
- Solid hardwood exterior and doors which are flush-fitted with traditional butt hinges and steel magnetic catches.
- Hardwood, granite or quartz surfaces
- Hand finishes - oils; matt and satin varnishes; eggshell and satinwood paints from the Devine and Farrow and Ball ranges (eco-friendly options available).
