Natural Roofing Slates
Natural slate is probably the best roofing material in the world and has been used by man for thousands of years. Not only will good quality slate outlast other roofing materials, but when fitted properly, it will frequently outlive the lifetime of its building. The lively market for second hand slates bears this out.

Slate retains its colour and although it may weather with age, it will not fade. It is also an environmentally sound product, as it is quarried from a natural source rather than manufactured using industrial processes. In addition, it is non-combustible and is compatible with all other building materials. A slate roof is easily maintained, making it an economical choice, and it is available in a variety of sizes, colours and textures.

Roof Space Ventilation
Why ventilate? The average home produces 24 pints of atmospheric water every day, of which ½ escapes into the roof space. Home owners generate this moisture through cooking, showering, bathing, exercising, etc. Adequate ventilation must be provided to remove this water before it has time to damage the roof structure. If there is insufficient ventilation, the buildup of moisture over a period of time can cause roof timbers to rot, as well as rusting and weakening of metal fixings, felt damage and mould growth. In addition, personal items stored in the loft area may be rendered useless. These problems can be expensive to rectify.

Roofing Felts
Roofing felts are required in virtually all modern tile and slate pitched roof constructions for various reasons:

  • as a secondary line of defence against the elements

  • to reduce wind uplift

  • as a temporary roof covering

With an increasing number of roofing underlays available on the Irish market, it is important to take care when specifying which membrane to choose for your project.

Anyone intending to use high performance underlays should ensure they are suitable for use in Irish climatic conditions and that the material is fitted in accordance with the requirements of the manufacturers instructions, the independent certificate, the building regulations and code of practice requirements.

Architectural Slate
Although most commonly used for roofing, slate is also increasingly used for other building and architectural applications, including cladding, flooring and paving tiles, hard landscaping products, sills, copings and natural slate worktops.

With its unique combination of aesthetic and technical qualities, natural slate has long been a favourite with architects, designers, builders and landscapers.
