About Praxis Architecture

Praxis is the process by which a theory, lesson, or skill is enacted, practiced, embodied, or realised. It may also refer to the act of engaging, applying, exercising, realizing, or practicing ideas.

In the Spring of 1999 Michael O’Connor established the practice Michael O’Connor Architects and in the Spring of 2013 following the closure of O'Connor + Shanahan architects he founded ‘praxis architecture’.

The practice operates from two locations, Limerick and London. The Limerick studio is based in Mary St. in the heart of the medieval city adjacent to St. Mary’s Cathedral while the London studio is off London Wall, a stone’s throw from the Bank of England.

A deep interest in both the theoretical and practical side of architecture is at the heart of the practice. Each design is individual and derives from circumstances specific to that particular project including context, history, brief, experience and research.

Lengthy discussion forms the starting point for all projects and an ability to listen and to ask the right questions informs key decisions through the project lifecycle.

The aspiration is to create innovative solutions that respond to the context and qualities of site, are enriched by an inclusive and considered design process and react to timeframes and budget.

The practice benefits from Michael O’Connor’s twenty years in private practice and involvement in a diverse range of projects both in Ireland and Internationally.

Residence
Our residential experience is extensive and we find this work very rewarding due to the fact that one is working with the end user of the building through all stages of the project and thus can create a building tailored to that client's needs.

Through many years of working on residential projects of varying briefs, clients and circumstances we have vast knowledge of new build, remodelling and extension projects in the residential realm.

Heritage / Conservation
The conservation of the historic built environment is an important aspect of our practice and Michael O'Connor is a Conservation Architect on the RIBA Conservation Register and also an RIAI Architect Accredited in Conservation at Grade III.

We have worked on a number of Protected Structures in Ireland including the reinstatement of a Georgian terrace of 5 houses vacated by Limerick County Council in O'Connell St. in Limerick, the careful conservation, restoation and extension of a Glebe House in Co. Limerick among others.
