About Direct Cutting Limited

Direct Cutting

Direct Cutting is a UK-based online supplier of Unistrut-compatible strut channel, channel brackets, threaded rod, nuts and bolts, cable management systems, and stainless steel fixings - all available to order online with no minimum order requirement.

We're based at our depot in West Bromwich, West Midlands, where we stock and dispatch orders across the UK. Whether you're a sole trader, electrical contractor, M&E engineer, facilities manager, or a large construction firm, we're set up to serve you quickly and without fuss.

Why We Started

The strut channel and cable support market in the UK has long been dominated by trade-only distributors with opaque pricing, long lead times, and high minimum order quantities. For smaller contractors, one-off projects, or anyone who just needed a few metres cut to a specific length, the options were limited and expensive.

We launched Direct Cutting to change that. Our entire model is built around being accessible, transparent, and fast - with competitive prices that are visible to everyone, not just large account holders.

What Makes Us Different

Cut to your required length - Our strut channel and threaded rod can be cut to your exact specifications, reducing waste and saving you time on site.

No minimum order - Order what you need, when you need it. One bracket or one hundred - we treat every order the same.

Unistrut compatible - Our products are fully compatible with Unistrut systems, giving you confidence in fit and performance.

Fast UK-wide delivery - We dispatch promptly from our West Midlands depot to anywhere in the UK.

Real people, real service - You can reach us by phone or email during business hours. We're a small, hands-on team and we take customer service seriously.

This guide provides insights into choosing between plain oiled and galvanised strut channels for construction projects, ensuring the right material is used for the right environment to avoid costly mistakes over time.

Key Takeaways:

Plain Oiled: Ideal for indoor fabrication work, welding, and powder coating. It’s economical but requires post-fabrication finishing to prevent rust.
Galvanised Options: Pre-galvanised is suitable for dry, indoor environments, while hot-dip galvanised offers superior protection for outdoor and high-humidity conditions.
Prioritisation Framework: Outlines the best use cases for each type of finish, highlighting their corrosion risks and relative costs.

Plain Oiled Strut Channel: Explained as plain carbon steel with a mill oil finish that inhibits rust only temporarily. It's versatile for custom fabrication but unsuitable for environments with moisture unless further coated.

Galvanised Strut Channel:

Pre-Galvanised (PG): Coated before shaping, cost-effective for dry environments but leaves cut edges vulnerable.
Hot-Dip Galvanised (HDG): Offers full coverage and superior protection, suitable for harsh outdoor conditions.
Real-World Applications:

Indoor, Dry Environments: Both plain oiled and pre-galvanised can suffice with appropriate finishing.
High-Humidity & Outdoor Use: Hot-dip galvanised is recommended for its durability.
Coastal & Marine Settings: Stainless steel is preferred over galvanised for extreme conditions.
Cutting and Welding Considerations:

Plain oiled is better for welding due to the absence of toxic zinc fumes, but galvanised requires careful handling and post-cutting treatment.
Common Mistakes to Avoid:

Using plain oiled outdoors without finishing.
Choosing pre-galvanised instead of HDG for humid or outdoor conditions.
Failing to touch up cut edges of galvanised strut.
FAQs:

Advises on painting galvanised strut, confirms that plain oiled, self-colour, and black steel are synonymous, and discusses the longevity of hot-dip galvanised strut.
In conclusion, the article stresses the importance of selecting the appropriate strut channel finish based on environmental exposure to ensure long-term performance and cost-effectiveness.
