About Phoenix Stone Preservation & Consultancy Ltd
Old buildings need the right hands.
Phoenix Stone is led by a proud Irish craftsman who, while living in England, worked in conjunction with English Heritage methods on major heritage projects — and now brings that same standard of understanding and method-led craftsmanship back to Ireland.
Lime Renders, done properly.
Traditional lime rendering restores the ability of old walls to breathe, releasing moisture rather than trapping it behind modern cement.
Lime render is not a decorative coating — it is part of the wall's moisture system. On rubble stone and solid masonry, breathable lime allows moisture to pass out through the render rather than migrate inwards.
Each project begins with the substrate. We assess suction, key, previous repairs and exposure before selecting the appropriate lime — natural hydraulic or lime putty — and building up coats to a considered thickness and finish.
Lime Pointing, done properly.
Careful removal of failed pointing and re-pointing with the correct lime mortar restores both the appearance and the breathability of stonework. Our pointing makes us stand out.
Pointing is the softest, most sacrificial element of a stone wall — and that is deliberate. It should erode slightly over time so that the stone itself is protected.
Cement pointing reverses this logic: it becomes the hardest element and moisture is forced through the stone instead, accelerating decay. We remove failed pointing carefully, prepare the joint, and repoint with a lime mortar matched to the wall's history and exposure.
Stonework, done properly.
From loose rubble walls to carved detail, our stonework restores structural integrity while respecting the character of the original build.
Old stonework was assembled by hand, one decision at a time. Repair should be no different. We work stone-by-stone: understanding the coursing, the through-stones, the bedding and the way the wall was originally built.
This is the difference between rebuilding a wall and covering it. Where stones have failed, moved or been lost we source sympathetic replacements, and we finish with lime pointing appropriate to the wall.
St Astier Novaskin Thermal Lime Render, done properly.
A specialist thermal lime render system suitable for internal and external use on traditional buildings where heritage-led specification is essential.
St Astier Novaskin is a thermal insulated lime render developed to improve comfort and reduce heat loss in solid-wall buildings without compromising breathability. It sits within the family of natural hydraulic lime systems and is compatible with traditional fabric when properly specified and applied.
Phoenix Stone specialises in the correct use of Novaskin — internally where insulation is needed without introducing modern sealed systems, and externally where thermal improvement is desirable on old walls. Preparation, keying, coat build-up and curing are as important as the product itself.
French Drains, done properly.
Perimeter drainage designed to move ground water away from traditional walls — supporting the long-term health of solid masonry.
Many damp problems in old buildings do not begin in the wall itself. They begin at the base, where ground levels have been raised, concrete paths have been laid tight to the fabric, or drainage has failed.
A well-considered French drain — permeable, correctly graded, kept clear of the wall — can dramatically reduce ground moisture reaching a solid masonry base. It is a heritage-friendly intervention when specified as part of a wider moisture strategy.
Cement Render Removal, done properly.
Careful removal of inappropriate cement renders to allow the original stone to breathe again — often revealing beautiful, hidden fabric beneath.
A great deal of Phoenix Stone's work begins by undoing the wrong work. Cement render applied to solid stone walls traps moisture behind an impermeable skin, causing condensation, salt damage, blown mortar and internal damp.
We remove failed cement renders carefully, section by section, protecting the underlying stone and pointing. In many cases the wall beneath is far more beautiful than anyone expected — good stonework hidden for decades under a layer of grey.
Seasonal cement render removal ('hack-offs') may be available at advantageous rates during winter scheduling windows — talk to us if you have a project in mind.
Moisture & Breathability Assessment, done properly.
Technical assessment of how moisture is moving through your old building — and what an appropriate response looks like.
Old buildings are moisture-active systems. Understanding where water is coming from, how it is travelling and where it is going is the first step in any responsible repair.
We assess ground conditions, wall build-up, previous interventions, internal finishes and ventilation, and provide a clear written or verbal opinion on what is happening — and, crucially, what should and should not be done.
Heritage Repairs, done properly.
Sensitive repair of historic brick and stone fabric — matching materials, method and character to the original build.
Heritage repair is a discipline of restraint. Do enough to secure the fabric and no more. We work with the materials the wall was built with — lime, matched stone, matched brick — and finish the repair so it reads as part of the original building.
This applies equally to a cracked lintel, a lost cill, a section of failed brickwork or a full elevation. The principle is the same: understand it first, then repair it in kind.
Bespoke Fireplaces, done properly.
Bespoke fireplaces are specialist detail work delivered with the same respect for proportion, material authenticity and traditional craft that we bring to a heritage elevation.
We design and shape each fireplace to your detail — jambs, corbels, lintels and mantel — hand-modelled and cast in traditional lime-based materials for a durable, breathable, period-true finish. No modern cement, no compromise on authenticity.
Preservation, done properly.
Preservation is a mindset before it is a method: understand what the building is doing, why it is doing it, and intervene as little and as well as possible.
Most damage to old buildings comes from good intentions applied with the wrong material. Cement over lime, plastic paint over limewash, sealed floors under solid walls — each traps moisture in fabric that was designed to release it.
We approach preservation slowly. We look at what has failed, what is causing it, and whether the appropriate response is repair, replacement, or simply leaving well alone.
