£340k Revamp For Rossport School

Extensive building and renovation works are to be carried out at Coláiste Chomáin Gaeltacht school in Rossport.

Funding for the major revamp was approved by Minster for Community, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs, Éamon Ó Cuív.

Minster Ó Cuív and Cabinet colleague, Education Minister Batt O'Keeffe, said the Department had accepted the most competitive tender of almost €340,000.

Works include the construction of two new classrooms, craft room, engineering room, caretaker’s room and store, two changing rooms, staff toilets, student toilets and disabled toilet.

An external shed will be demolished and partial renovations will take place within the existing school building.

Fire alarm systems and water treatment facilities will also be upgraded, and extra car-parking spaces are to be created.

Minister Ó Cuív said the announcement would be welcomed by teachers and students in the co-educational school and by the local community in the heart of the Erris Gaeltacht.

"I’m delighted building work is set to begin on the Coláiste Chomáin project and that the Department of Education and Science has secured best value for money in the tendering process.

"It demonstrates this Government's continuing commitment to schools in Gaeltacht areas and to rural communities."

He added: "I've no doubt that the new classrooms and more modern facilities in this co-educational VEC school will advance the efforts the school’s hard-working students and teachers to reach new levels of achievement into the future."
