A new piece of public art has been commissioned for the entrance to Mullingar Town Park, in Co Westmeath.
Westmeath County Council said the feature will enhance the local environment and act as a focal point for those living in the vicinity and visiting the town.
The sculpture will be located at the front entrance to the park on Austin Friars Street.
In July 2009, the county council advertised the commission and received over 50 applications from national and international artists.
A short list of five pieces has now been drawn up.
Scale models of the short-listed sculptures went on public display yesterday at The Atrium, County Buildings, on Mount Street.
The council has invited members of the public to view the scale models before the final selection in late December.
Contributing artists were asked to consider the culture and history of the town in developing their submissions.
This scheme is funded by the Department of Environment through the Mullingar Sewerage Improvement Scheme, whereby a percentage of government funded capital costs is ring fenced for an art project.
