Snowtopia Plans Quashed By Planners

Planners have rejected proposals for a €100m indoor ski resort in west Dublin.

Developers behind the 32,000 square metres 'Snowtopia' project said they are extremely disappointed by the decision.

It had been suggested the ambitious scheme would have created 500 much-needed construction jobs.

The proposals were originally rejected by Fingal County Council in February.

Developers Twinlite Ltd appealed the ruling, which was then studied by An Bord Pleanala.

The planning appeals board agreed the development would contravene local land zoning rules.

Planners also referred to the lack of transport serving the locality.

A Snowtopia spokeswoman told the Irish Independent the company was prepared to set up a shuttle bus system to and from the complex.

"They were prepared to do everything," she said

It is now believed the developers will look for an alternative site.

The spokeswoman insisted the project was not "pie in the sky".

"This was a fully funded project. They have already spent €300,000 on planning and had the backing of an English venture company," she said.

The Industrial Development Agency (IDA) opposed the scheme, claiming the ski resort would be unsustainable and conflict with zoning policy.

An Bord Pleanala said the site was in an area designated for science and technology-related employment.
