The Irish Minister for Education, Batt O'Keeffe is to ask for a report into the construction of a residence for the president of the University of Limerick.
The university has said that no taxpayers' money was spent on the new, €1.1m home for Professor Don Barry, with funding coming from "philanthropic donations" instead.
The University of Limerick has debts of €3m.
Speaking on RTÉ's Morning Ireland programme, Minister O’Keefe said that although he had only recently learned of the three-storey, five-bedroom house, it appeared "lavish" in a time when most universities need to show restraint in their spending.
