The Ireland Chapter of the Project Management Institute (PMI) is calling on the Government to prioritise project management in planning economic recovery.

In a statement, the organisation said that in times of grave economic challenge, Ireland cannot afford anything less than excellent management of recovery and development projects.

"This is no longer an optional matter," said Kieran Boyce, President of the Ireland Chapter of PMI.

"As a country, we have no choice but to embrace these proven methods to ensure that we take better control of our projects into the future.

"If we are really going to build a knowledge economy, rather than just talk about one, then professional project management is a critical discipline. It is just as important to creating a high-tech, knowledge-based economy as having affordable, high-quality broadband."

He continued: "We are calling on the Government to lead by example, by making a commitment to develop professional project management and supporting project management courses and professional bodies. But of course the need for excellent project management crosses into all areas, from non-profit to major corporations, from SMEs to the public sector.

"The project management discipline is there to be harnessed fully for Ireland’s good. It would be folly not to do so."
