Fifty new cycle racks are being installed throughout Belfast city centre as part of the £28million Belfast Streets Ahead project.

NI Social Development Minister Margaret Ritchie helped launch the new cycle racks, along with sustainable transport charity Sustrans and DRD Roads Service.

The Minister said: "These new cycle racks provide further opportunities for people to use bicycles as their main means of transport around the city centre.

"Providing designated, convenient cycle racks is another part of the £28million pound regeneration for our capital city.

"I welcome my department’s funding of this project as it not only promotes a healthier lifestyle, but it also brings about sustainable benefits to a city centre that will gain from increased pedestrianised in the near future. Taking traffic out of the city centre will make for a safer, hassle free area for pedestrians and cyclists. The erection of new cycle racks will further promote this."

Steven Patterson, from Sustrans added: "Cycling is a great way to get around a city as it is quick and healthy and does not pollute the air with fumes and noise. Convenient cycle parking located outside shops is very important so traders can see the economic benefits that cyclists bring to a city.

"We commend DSD and their designers for consulting with users on where the cycle stands should be located."
