Rural minor roads are so bad they have been compared to Third World dirt tracks.
A Sligo councillor is concerned that local country roads will become the equivalent of 'dirt tracks' if funding isn't made available.
Work needs to be commissioned by road building contractors urgently according to Fine Gael Councillor Michael Fleming.
He said there is a real fear that no money will be allocated this year for the repair of back roads or class three routes.
He claimed today these 'back roads' have been the worst affected as a result of the extreme weather conditions witnessed towards the end of last year.
Cllr Fleming said if rural roads are ignored this year, they will become irreparable.
