Taoiseach To Open Limerick Tunnel

The €660m Limerick Tunnel has reached completion.

Taoiseach Brian Cowen will officially open the 670-metre long tunnel to traffic on Tuesday.

The facility will see 100 new jobs created and signal the removal of over 20,000 cars from city centre streets.

The work was carried out by a consortium of Strabag, John Sisk & Son Ltd, Lagan Holdings Ltd and Roadbridge Ltd.

The tunnel will be PPP operated by Direct Route for 30 years then the National Roads Authority will takeover.

Mayor of Limerick, Cllr Maria Byrne, Said: "The sooner it opens the better. People are looking forward to it, because it will ease pressure on the Rosbrien Road which has been inundated with traffic recently. It will remove an awful lot of unneccesary traffic from the city."
