Cheeky thieves are being sought by the police investigating criminal damage of more than €100,000 to vacant newly built homes in Galway.
The incident occurred in mid August and saw 16 of the 18 vacant homes in the Slíabh Bhán estate in Ballybane 'attacked' by vandals on one hand and targeted by thieves 'stealing to order' at the same time.
Among the fittings taken were 16 costly high-tech water cylinders that are very sophisticated, being powered by the sun by being connected to solar panels.
Alone, they are a major loss as they would cost in the region of €1,300 each. Also, severe damage from leaking water, including flooding and damp, has been caused to the kitchen, bathroom and living areas of the homes.
In addition to theft, windows were smashed, doors and roofs were damaged to gain entry and in one instance, an intruder defecated in the sink of one of the homes.
The estate was built on behalf of the Council and was opened in May 2009.
It received commendations in both the Royal Institute of Architects (RIAI) and Architects Association of Ireland annual awards ceremonies in the housing categories for 2010.
