A property developer could be bringing a substantial fillip to Dundalk, if a bid for a new supermarket gets the green light.
The project would see additional facilities and a hotel upgrade with the creation of much-needed construction jobs at the site of the town's Fairways Hotel.
Sarbon Ltd has applied for planning permission to Louth County Council to build the new retail and service area at the hotel on the Dublin Road.
The development would see part of the existing hotel building (4,840sqm) being demolished - believed to be the now closed Studio 8 night club - but the Fairways Hotel would remain open with the plan catering for a modernisation of the facility.
The proposed supermarket would incorporate an off licence consisting of 1,640sqm gross floor area, five retail/service units with a total gross floor area of 690sqm and a crèche.
There would also be associated car parking, signage, service areas, landscaping, boundary treatment and site development works.
The planning application also provides for the reconfiguration and modernisation of the Fairways Hotel including a new foyer/reception area and restaurant. There would also be part demolition of the Fairways Hotel complex of buildings.
Vehicular access to the proposed development would be via the existing entrance to the Fairways Hotel, which would be upgraded. A service entrance is also proposed for the Old Golf Links Road.
A decision on Sarbon Ltd's planning application is due on October 27.
