Biotricity To Build €40m Biomass Plant

The green energy firm Biotricity has announced it is to construct a new €40m biomass plant in Co Offaly, which will create over 260 jobs.

200 new jobs will be created to construct the new plant in Rhode and it will employ 65 staff in its first year of opening.

The 15 Mega Watt Combined Heat and Power (CHP) biomass facility will be powered by the supply of willow grown by Irish farmers, and will generate enough energy to meet the requirements of 5,000 homes.

Taoiseach Brian Cowen said: "I wish to congratulate Biotricity on their ambitious and worthy plan. It is a shining example of the tangible benefits that the smart economy can bring."

He also added that it was good news for the environment and good news for local jobs.

The facility will underpin the displacement of the equivalent of 210,000 tonnes of CO2 annually and will thereby make an important contribution to Ireland’s greenhouse gas emissions reduction targets.
