Construction on the new emergency department at Kerry General Hospital has begun.
According to Kerry North Fianna Fáil TD Thomas McEllistrim, the building contractors, BAM Building Ltd, have moved onto the site and preliminary ground works have commenced.
The new emergency department will feature a resuscitation room, additional treatment and observation facilities and special facilities for children.
As a result of the work being carried out, access to the current emergency department has changed and the public are encouraged to note the directional signage when entering the hospital campus. The public can enter the department via the external church corridor door. Access for outpatient appointments and visiting remains unchanged via the main entrance.
Deputy McEllistrim said: "I'm delighted that work has now begun on the new emergency department and that the building contractors are on site at the hospital. Kerry General Hospital has been needing this new facility for some time and I know a lot of people will be happy to see the project progress."
