Work is to begin in October, 2011 on the construction of three new footbridges across the canal in Tullamore, Co. Offaly.
At the March monthly meeting of Tullamore Town Council, Town Engineer, Paul Devaney said funding has been obtained for the work and he recommended that it proceed with the work.
According to www.unearthore.comThe construction of the three bridges is expected to be completed in the second quarter of 2012 and will be done in conjunction with Waterways Ireland.
Footbridge number one will be erected over the canal from Clontarf road to Bury Quay/Kilbride Park.
A second bridge will be built from Convent View to Convent Road. This will entail the removal of the existing footbridge. A third fully accessible footbridge will also be constructed adjacent to the Kilbeggan bridge along with associated pedestrian crossings at Convent Road, Convent View and Clontarf road onto Emmet Road. The existing pedestrian crossing across Kilbeggan bridge will be removed.
A new boardwalk at Bury Quay also forms part of the plan with the enhancement of the existing entrance to the Heritage Centre. This will take the form of paving and a glazed porch to accommodate ease of access for visitors.
