Waterford Gets €6m School

The construction of a €6m secondary school in Waterford is really taking off this week with news that the mechanical and electrical sub-contractors have now been appointed for the works involved in the construction of the two-storey secondary school building at Cannon Street, Waterford.

Murphy & Kelly (Thomastown) Limited has been given the sub contract and will start work on the school soon.

It will consist of 10 general classrooms, two lecture rooms, one music drama area, a music room, learning support room and store, guidance suite, a religion room and meditation area, a mathematics room, two social studies rooms, one home school community liaison facility, one multimedia learning laboratory, three science laboratories and preparation areas, a demonstration room, an art/craft room and store, a home economics room and store, a dress design room and a business/computer room.

Also included is a technology room, woodwork/technology machining and preparation area, library and ancillary stores, a principal's office, deputy principal's office, general office, four pastoral offices, a staff room, a first aid room, project storage, general storage, a general purpose/dining/social area, a kitchenette and store, toilets, a boiler and plant room, a communications centre and an electrical room.

There will be three staircases, a lift and entrance lobby, two internal-open to sky-courtyards, external storage and yard, hard play courts area and 37 car parking spaces.

A new, permanent entrance from Vincent-White Road, that will also be used as the contractor's entrance and all associated drainage and site works.

The existing school building is to be demolished towards the end of the project.

Main construction work commenced on site during mid-February, and the contract period is estimated at 12 months. The cost of the scheme is in the region of €6 million.

The architect is CJ Falconer and Associates.
