University Housing Given 'Green Light'

Despite an appeal an Irish University has been granted planning permission to build a new housing complex for students.

Detailed plans for the construction of 77 student apartments was submitted to Kildare County Council in May of this year by the National University of Ireland however a third party appeal was submitted against the plans soon after- this has now been over turned- giving the university the 'green light'.

Stephen Wall and others appealed to An Bord Pleanala on June this year against the decision. An Bord Pleanala considered the appeal but the plans were approved again this month.

Designed by Heneghan Peng Architects the total floor area of the complex will equal 13,063.92 square metres and comprise 77 student apartments.

Sixty- Five of these apartment will be five bed units, six of the units will contain six bedrooms while the remaining six apartments will be three bedroom duplex units.

Included in the plans is a residents office, student social room, retail unit and a bicycle store.

The development will be organised in four courtyard buildings ranging from nine storeys to three storeys in height.

Meanwhile the development will incorporate the realignment of the existing playing fields, the provision of additional 18m high floodlights to the playing fields and the construction of new perimeter fencing (2.4m high) to the playing fields.

Roughan and O'Donovan have been appointed as the structural engineers, Michael Punch and Partners have taken the role of consulting engineers,Varming Consulting Engineers are the Mechanical engineers for the project and Bruce Shaw have been named as the quantity surveyors during the development.
