NI Water has successfully completed the first phase of its Water Mains Rehabilitation Project and have released details about the ongoing second phase, according to Trenchless International.

With 491km now completed, the scheme involves upgrading in excess of 1,000 km of water mains infrastructure throughout Northern Ireland.

NI Water told the magazine that 69 per cent of the project completed so far, had been successfully installed using No-Dig technology. The decision to implement trenchless technology was with the aim to minimise disruption and the amount of waste material generated in the process.

The planned investment of over £100 million, to be used over the next five years, will dramatically reduce leakage and improve the quality and reliability of water supply throughout NI.

Pipe Bursting techniques have been used for 45 per cent of mains, 20 per cent have been installed through directional drilling, and 4 per cent have been completed using sliplining techniques.
