The SDLP has hit out at the Executive's proposals for one-off fuel payments claiming "it is a very short term solution".

SDLP Foyle MP Mark Durkan would like support for cancer patients to be continued, in a more consistent way as part of a "long term commitment".

However, he also said it would come as a relief to many older people who are finding it difficult to heat their homes.

He said: "This recognition of vulnerable people in our communities who need help is very welcome, particularly the inclusion of those suffering from cancer as these people are often especially susceptible and sensitive to the cold weather."

Over 250,000 people will receive a payment, including pensioners, unemployed and cancer patients.
