The US Ambassador to Ireland, His Excellency Mr Dan Rooney, visited the site of a proposed new bridge across Carlingford Lough linking counties Louth and Down.
With huge potential to unlock the region's tourism potential and to connect communities on both sides of the border, the proposed bridge will connect Cornamucklagh near Omeath, Co Louth with Narrow Water and Dromore near Warrenpoint, Co Down.
Ambassador Rooney who can trace his family roots to Newry, Co Down, was briefed at County Hall in Dundalk by Cllr Oliver Tully, Chairman, Louth County Council and Conn Murray, County Manager.
He then visited the bridge site and travelled across the border to Co Down where he met Tom McCall, CEO, Newry & Mourne District Council and members of the unique partnership group bringing together members of Louth Local Authorities and Newry & Mourne District Council.
Speaking afterwards, Ambassador Rooney said: "The proposed bridge at Narrow Water is the sort of cross-border, inter-community project that both literally and figuratively will bring people together. I wish this project all the best."
