A Co Tyrone farmer yesterday pleaded guilty and was fined £750 plus court costs of £22 at Strabane Magistrates Court.
Mr Mervyn Nelson, 113 Camus Road, Douglas Bridge, Co Tyrone was fined for making a polluting discharge to a waterway.
On 31 August 2011, a Water Quality Inspector, acting on behalf of the Northern Ireland Environment Agency, inspected a waterway near Douglas Bridge and observed it to be visibly polluted with sewage fungus and bloodworms. More than 1 km of waterway was observed to be affected. The material causing the fungal growth was found to be discharging from farm premises owned by Mr Nelson.
A sample taken at the time of the incident confirmed that the discharge contained poisonous, noxious or polluting matter which was potentially harmful to fish life in the receiving waterway.
