Junior Ministers Martina Anderson and Jonathan Bell today welcomed plans for a major new entrepreneurial development project in North Belfast.
The Belfast Distillery Company, led by local man Peter Lavery, has been chosen as the preferred developer for the lease and regeneration opportunity of A Wing at the Crumlin Road Gaol.
The Belfast Distillery Company intends to invest over £3million to convert the existing A Wing into a small operational whiskey distillery, which will have a tasting room and bar, a restaurant and café, bonded whiskey storage, an interpretive area, storage facilities and offices.
Junior Minister Anderson said: "The proposed development by the Belfast Distillery Company is a very welcome boost for North Belfast. It is always encouraging to see a local man investing in his home city and never more so given the challenging economic times we are experiencing.
"The current economic downturn has affected many sectors, including the tourism, retail and business services and this announcement will be warmly welcomed, particularly in the local area. This is a good day for Belfast."
