SDLP Social Development spokesperson Mark H Durkan has welcomed legislation which will provide more protections to landlords and tenants but has expressed concern that it will not be robust enough.
The Foyle MLA said: "The mandatory registration of landlords is something that is to be welcomed. The rationale behind this legislation is to ensure that high standards of privately rented accommodation.
"It should also afford much needed protections to tenants and also neighbouring residents who often suffer due to their inability to trace landlords and inform them about problems with their property.
"This would be most welcomed by many who have to live with issues such as derelict houses or anti-social behaviour.
"However, I am not convinced that this legislation is sufficiently robust. The penalties for non-compliance may not provide an adequate deterrent to landlords not to register.
"Perhaps more emphasis should be placed on the advantages that this scheme will have for landlords too. They will be fully informed of their responsibilities but also of their rights."
