A Co Tyrone farmer who pleaded guilty to waterway pollution was fined a total of £300 plus court costs at Dungannon Magistrate's Court.
Mr Patrick Taggart, of Albany Road, Killycolpy, Dungannon, was fined for making a polluting discharge to a waterway.
On 15 September 2011 and 22 November 2011, a Water Quality Inspector, acting on behalf of the Northern Ireland Environment Agency, inspected an unnamed tributary of Lough Neagh and observed it to be grossly polluted.
The waterway was observed to be cloudy grey in colour with an agricultural odour. Upon further investigation the Inspector discovered a pipe discharging silage effluent into the waterway. The waterway was polluted for approximately 1 kilometre. The source of the polluting discharge was traced to a farm owned by Mr Taggart.
A sample taken at the time of the incident confirmed that the discharge contained poisonous, noxious or polluting matter which was potentially harmful to fish life in the receiving waterway.
