Ulster Unionist MLA Tom Elliott has questioned Enterprise Minister Arlene Foster's ability to take an objective view on any further licence applications relating to fracking, following comments in a letter she sent to the Co-op regarding the screening of a film about hydraulic fracturing.

Mr Elliott said: "The Minister’s hostile line to the Co-op in which she accused it of “demonstrable support for a film which presents a wholly one-sided and partial approach to the debate about hydraulic fracturing” raises a number of questions.

"Surely as the Minister responsible for energy policy, there should be a much more neutral and objective approach, taking on board all the information that is relevant to the issue?

"Her comments raise real doubts as to whether or not she is capable of taking an objective and reasoned view on any further applications re fracking.

"Indeed there are many who would say her hostile response indicates an attempt to prohibit information on the issue being released to the community.

"The on-going debate about fracking requires that as much factual information as possible be placed in the public domain to enable politicians, policy makers and the general public to reach an informed decision. The Minister’s attempts to stifle debate do not bode well for the future."
