DUP Deputy Leader Nigel Dodds has welcomed the announcement by the Government that the 3pence per lite fuel price increase has been abandoned.
However, the North Belfast MP called upon the Government to go further and actually move to cut the price of fuel for motorists.
Mr Dodds said: "On the back of the u-turns on pasties and caravans this latest reversal of tax policy has eroded another large section of the Government's budget.
"This move on fuel prices will be welcomed by hard-pressed motorists across the UK, but not least in Northern Ireland where we pay the highest prices not just in the United Kingdom, but within Europe. However, the Government must go further to demonstrate that it recognises the problems facing families and businesses at the current time. A move to reduce the price of fuel would not only be a reprieve for household budgets, but would help to stimulate our economy at a time when it needs it most."
