The national award for public and community parks and green spaces, the Green Flag award scheme recognises and rewards the best green spaces across the country.
East Belfast Councillor Laura McNamee, who sits on a community planning group at Belfast City Council, said the hard work of the local community and a number of statutory agencies could be credited with the park gaining the top environmental award.

She said: "I wholeheartedly congratulate everyone who has worked hard to bring Green Flag status to Belmont Park.
"The park is a well-used vibrant open space and this award proves what first class facilities it has to offer.
"Green Flag status is awarded partly due to community involvement and special praise must go to Friends of Belmont Park, whose members have worked hard to ensure the park remains an area of natural beauty. Other groups can learn from their example and get involved with community planning, enhancing local assets."
