SIPTU Condemns Lagan Brick's Disrespect Of State Institutions

SIPTU has condemned the owners of Lagan Brick for the disrespect they have shown to the dispute settlement mechanisms of the State by refusing to agree to a just solution to the long-running dispute at the company’s manufacturing plant in Kingscourt, Co. Cavan.

SIPTU Organiser, John Regan, said: "The Labour Court recommended that the 25 workers involved in this dispute receive an enhanced severance package of one week's pay per year of service on top of the statutory entitlements of two weeks pay per year. The company sent no representatives to the Labour Court hearing and it has also failed to acknowledge the recommendation or any of the correspondence sent to it by the workers’ representatives.

"This total disregard for the dispute settlement mechanisms of the State must be condemned. The workers are now calling upon local politicians and communities to make clear to the owners of Lagan Brick that the days of one law for the rich and another for workers have come to an end."

John Regan added: "The workers are commencing a leafleting campaign in the communities where companies controlled by the Lagan Group are based. The leaflets will outline exactly the disrespectful manner in which the company’s owners have treated their employees, their employees’ families and the Labour Court.

"In addition the workers are calling upon local politicians to ensure that the Lagan Group does not benefit from public contracts. When tendering for publicly funded capital projects a company must make clear it’s commitment to respect the State’s dispute settlement mechanisms. This is something the Lagan Group clearly does not adhere to."
