Resurfacing Works To Begin On A1

There will be a number of lane restrictions in place over the next three weeks on the A1 dual carriageway between Dromore and Banbridge as Roads Service start seven kilometres of resurfacing work.

The road works will be completed over three weekends, Friday 24 August to Monday 27 August 2012, Friday 31 August to Monday 2 September 2012 and Friday 7 September to Monday 10 September 2012. A diversion route will be signed during all closures.

Mark McPeak, Roads Service's Project Manager said: "These essential works will strengthen the A1 so that it can carry today’s very high traffic volumes, provide a high quality and an even running surface, thereby improving the safety and comfort of road users."

The works operations and traffic management arrangements have been carefully programmed to minimise inconvenience to the travelling public, local residents and business, however, some disruption will be unavoidable.

To facilitate the works and for safety reasons, it will be essential to operate lane restrictions on the A1 during these works. Details of the planned lane closures are as follows:

•23:00 on Friday 24 August 2012 to 06.00 on Monday 27 August 2012 Southbound from Gowdystown Road to Drumneath Road.

•23:00 on Friday 31 August 2012 to 06.00 on Monday 3 September 2012 Northbound from Lisnaree Road to Skeltons Road.

•21:00 on Friday 7 September 2012 to 06.00 on Monday 10 September 2012 Southbound from Grove Road to Mount Ida Road.

During the works one lane will remain open in each direction on the A1 in a contraflow arrangement. However, there will be restrictions on traffic wanting to enter or leave the A1 within the works areas. During the third weekend, traffic diversions will be in place for all southbound traffic entering Dromore. A temporary 40mph speed limit will also be in operation.

Mr McPeak continued: "Working times will be restricted to overnight and weekends to take advantage of the reduced traffic flows. However, some delays will be inevitable and we would ask that motorists be patient as these essential works progress."

The exact dates and times of the A1 closures for resurfacing works will depend on weather conditions and scheme progression and therefore could be subject to change.
