Residents of Dodder View Cottages and the surrounding area have come up with a novel way of highlighting their support for Dublin City Council's proposals to improve flood defences in their area.
Lord Mayor Naoise Ó Muirí has unveiled a 45ft long x 8ft wide knitted replica floodwall at Beatty's Avenue, Ballsbridge.
The knitted floodwall was made by local residents working with artist Martina O'Brien. The design is based on the flood velocity maps produced for the Draft Dodder Flood Risk Assessment and Management Study.
"Although you can never eliminate the possibility of flooding these flood defences make flooding less likely in Dodder View Cottages and the surrounding area. It is very encouraging to see local residents do something so imaginative to support the council’s proposals to improve the area’s flood defences," said Lord Mayor Ó Muirí.
The council anticipates that detailed proposals for this flood defence wall will go on public display later this year. Elsewhere Dublin City Council is currently carrying out a public consultation process on its proposals to improve coastal flood defences on the River Dodder, at London Bridge and New Bridge.
These recommendations include proposals to:
•Raise the parapet walls at New Bridge by 300mm to a height of 1.2metres.
•Raise the parapet walls at both sides of London Bridge by 720mm to an overall height of 1.75metres
These proposals were made under the Dodder Catchment Flood Risk Assessment and Management (CFRAM) study and the public can give their views until 19th November.
