€290,000 Allocated For Coastal Protection Works

Mr. Brian Hayes, TD, Minister of State with special responsibility for the Office of Public Works (OPW) was in Strandhill today to announce an allocation of €290,000 for coastal protection works at Strandhill, Co. Sligo.

Minister Hayes said: "I am delighted to be here today to announce that funding of €290,000 is to be allocated to Sligo County Council under the OPW Minor Flood Mitigation Works and Coastal Protection Scheme for the provision of a new termination ramp structure at the southern end of the existing public coastal path/rock beach revetment (approximately 70 m) and for local upgrading to the existing revetment (approximately 40 m).

"This announcement today brings the total expenditure by the OPW on coastal protection at Strandhill to more than €750,000 and these proposed works will provide safe access to the southern beach, provide upgraded and enhanced protection to the southern end of the existing revetment, and limit further erosion of the existing high southern dunes," the Minister said.

The Minister concluded: "The provision of funding for minor flood mitigation and coastal protection works complements a range of other ongoing OPW programmes, including carrying out of major flood relief schemes and flood studies, aimed at managing national flood risk in a proactive and comprehensive way. I have no doubt that Strandhill beach and its environs will benefit greatly from these works when complete."
