Energia Supplies Lighting Power To All Irish Local Authorities

All Irish local authorities are now having their public lighting powered by Energia following the leading independent energy provider’s most recent public procurement win. Energia continues to win public tenders to supply unmetered electricity to the local authorities and now powers 42,000 sites around Ireland.

Energia expects to supply over 195 gigawatt hours of electricity to power the local authorities’ public lighting systems in this new 3 year deal. The value of the contract is estimated to be in the region of €33 million.

The unmetered electricity supply market covers an important number of local authority services such as public lighting. The market was opened to competition in 2009, allowing local authorities to benefit from increased competition among providers. Energia was the first independent power provider to enter the market. Since the market opening, Energia had won the business of over 50 county and city councils.

These wins will see Energia supplying all the County Councils and many local authorities in Ireland including Cork City Council, Dublin City Council, Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council, Galway County Council, Limerick City Council and Waterford City and County Councils.

The supply deal also covers a number of leading public sector bodies including Dublin Airport Authority, An Garda Siochana, RTE and Waterways Ireland.

Commenting on the deal, Alan Mulcahy, Business Markets Manager, Energia said: "Since we were the first independent energy provider to enter the unmetered market in 2009, Energia has been bringing the benefit of lower priced electricity to local authorities throughout Ireland. We are delighted to win this major public tender and continue to deliver real savings to county and city councils.

"Whether its dual-fuel gas and electricity deals, “green energy” or supplying unmetered electricity to public sector bodies in Ireland, it is easy for Irish businesses to benefit from competitive energy deals with Energia. Added to the price package Energia offer excellent customer service and with Energia On-line, customers can also analyze and interrogate their energy consumption, discover usage patterns and produce reports. This information in turn can be used with another product, the Energia Bureau, to manage energy efficiency projects in the business."

In the renewable sector, Energia Renewables has over 140MW of contracted wind generation under construction and commissioning throughout Ireland this year which will increase its share of wind generation to around 25%.
