Additional Funding Announced Towards Completion Of Landslide Programme

Phil Hogan T.D., Minister for Environment, Community and Local Government has announced additional funding of €1.2m in 2012 towards the completion of the Cobh Landslide Prevention Programme.

Cobh has a history of landslides with the associated threat to public safety and property. The Government, through the Department of the Environment, Community and Local Government has provided considerable financial assistance over recent years towards works undertaken jointly by Cobh Town Council and Cork County Council to strengthen walls and slopes in areas most at risk of landslide. The overall effect of works undertaken is to re-enforce dangerously unstable slopes and walls to mitigate the risk of landslide, particularly in inhabited areas and public places such as a local primary school.

Announcing the funding Minister Hogan said: "I am glad to be able to announce the additional funding for the Cobh Landslide Prevention Programme. My Department has prioritised this work during my tenure as have Cork County Council and Cobh Town Council. Very high walls and slopes are a feature of Cobh and while striking they add to the complexity of this project. In light of the construction challenges, progress over the last two years has been very good. This extra funding will enable the momentum of the work to continue and will help to keep the people of Cobh and visitors to this picturesque town safe. To that end, I am happy to be able to provide a total of €5.8 million this year in order to substantially complete works in areas of Cobh that have been identified as requiring priority treatment."
