Sinn Féin MLA Oliver McMullan has called for the natural gas infrastructure to be extended into all areas of North and East Antrim.
Mr McMullan said: "I have been campaigning for natural gas be extended into the villages of Carnlough, Glenariffe, Cushendal and Cushendun and have now been told that the private companies will not put the infrastructure into place due to the lack of economic return.
"At present with the increase and fluctuation of oil and electricity prices it is important that all households have as many options as possible. Natural gas is a cheaper alternative at present and all households and businesses must be given access to that option.
"Not only will this allow the area to attract inward investment but will also help fuel poverty in the region.
"Again we see rural communities being discriminated against in not having a service, that is available to most other communities, being denied to them due to cost and this is unacceptable."
