Bandon Main Drainage Scheme May Recommence

Fianna Fáil Mayor of Bandon, Cllr Gillian Coughlan, has given a cautious welcome to news that the Bandon Main Drainage Scheme may recommence.

Personnel from Cork County Council and Byrne Looby Consultants attended the March meeting of Bandon Town Council, where it was explained there is currently a tendering process underway for consultants to carry out a further Site Investigation during the summer months.

Cllr Coughlan commented: "It is now envisaged that heavy excavation will not take place until November, at best. This is yet another delay and disappointment for the people of Bandon, who are fearful of another rain deluge that would again overwhelm the drainage system.

"Members were assured that funding for this scheme has been guaranteed by the Department of the Environment. I would prefer to see works begin sooner rather than later in case of any budgetary or administrative snag that would see this scheme shelved. The people of Bandon need and deserve this vital upgrade to the infrastructure of the town in order to plan and build for the future."

Bandon's Flood Relief Scheme is also progressing through the design and planning process and Mayor Coughlan gave a very warm welcome to the prospect of the scheme being extended to include tributaries of the Bandon River at Monorone and Kibrittain Road.
