Minister for Housing and Planning Minister Jan O'Sullivan and Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport Leo Varadkar have launched a new design manual that will significantly improve our streetscapes in the future.
The new manual aims to end the practice of designing streets as traffic corridors, and instead focus on the needs of pedestrians, cyclists and public transport users.
The Design Manual for Urban Roads was overseen by the Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport and the Department of the Environment, Community and Local Government.
Minister O'Sullivan said: "Urban roads and networks should not only be attractive, safe and well cared for but their potential for providing communities with a strong sense of place and multiple options for movement must also be examined and in this context the needs of people must come first."
The Minister welcomed the focus in the Manual on greater collaboration and consultation between local authorities and the broader community in advancing proposals for road and street design.
