SDLP social development spokesperson Mark H Durkan MLA has responded to comments made by the new chairman of the Northern Ireland Housing Executive (NIHE), Donald Hoodless regarding proposals for its break-up.
Mr Durkan said: "The latest comments from the Chairman of the Housing Executive are somewhat premature and will further fuel confusion around the re-structuring of the Housing Executive.
"There is still no mention as to what role tenants will have in deciding their future and whether there will be a tenants vote. There are significant implications in any increase in rent for people struggling with the cost of living.
"These proposals will cause consternation among housing associations; specifically as to how the new associations mooted by Mr Hoodless will interact with and compete with existing housing associations on a level playing field.
"I take some heart from the fact housing allocation will still be based on need and also take some consolation from the fact that most NIHE jobs will be retained within the new associations. However more detail is required around the extent of protection that will be afforded to employees.
"While there is no doubt the Housing Executive need to improve efficiency in the delivery of social housing it is important that this process is not rushed through to meet the Ministers ambitious timetable for abolition of the Housing Executive."
