€2.8m Approved For Cheekpoint Sewerage Scheme

Fine Gael Waterford Deputy, Paudie Coffey, has welcomed the announcement by Minister for Environment, Community and Local Government, Phil Hogan TD, that he has approved €2.8 million of funding for the construction of the Cheekpoint Sewerage Scheme, Sewerage Network Upgrade and Wastewater Treatment Plant Design Build Contract. The funding is part of the Seven Villages Sewerage Scheme and is included in the Minister's Water Services Investment Programme, which will lead to improved water quality in the area when the works are completed.

Mr Coffey said: "This project is part of the infrastructure and capital investment programme 2012-2016 as announced by Government in November 2011. There are more than 5,000 people living in the seven designated villages, all of whom will benefit as a result of this upgrade.

"This particular part of the scheme in Cheekpoint will cater for a population of 750, as well as upgrading the existing sewerage collection systems by the provision of a sewerage collection network and a new wastewater pumping station. The works will also involve the decommissioning of seven existing septic tanks and the connection of 39 existing premises to the upgraded sewerage collection system.

"This is a significant capital investment in county Waterford that will mean vastly improved water quality in local Waterford rivers, and now in the Cheekpoint area. When complete, these works will provide a modern sewerage infrastructure which will cater for current residential and commercial needs in the towns and villages involved, as well as setting a platform for development needs for the foreseeable future."
