The scheme, which was financed from the Neighbourhood Renewal Investment Fund, centred on the restoration of the historic Linenhall Arch, one of the oldest architectural features in Newry, and the refurbishment of the surrounding area to enhance its prominence.

The Minister explained: "The Linen Hall Arch was built in the 1700s as the main entrance to the Linen Hall which served the merchants of Newry. Despite the many changes that have taken place in the area since then, it has remained intact.
"I was very happy that the Executive was able to provide the funding necessary to restore this important project and make it more visible to residents and those using the adjacent Canal Walkway."
The Minister thanked the Northern Ireland Housing Executive who managed the contract and the Newry Neighbourhood Renewal Partnership Board who included it in its Action Plan for regenerating the area. He also paid tribute to the Greater Linen Hall Community Association and in particular the late Oliver Casey, who had lobbied for the scheme.
