New Waste Bye-Laws For Dublin Come Into Force

Dublin City Council's New Bye-Laws regulating the storage, presentation and collection of household and commercial waste came in to force on Monday 1 July 2013.

The Bye-Laws will regulate the collection of approx 440,000 tonnes of waste from around 150,000 homes and businesses in the capital.

A crucial aspect of the new Bye-Laws will be the requirement of all waste must be disposed of by an approved collector or disposed of at an approved facility. Failure to comply with this or any other breaches of the Bye-Laws can result in an on the spot fine and/or Court Proceedings.

"These Bye-Laws will assist the Council in its ongoing efforts to enhance cleanliness levels across the City," according to Seamus Lyons, Assistant City Manager, Dublin City Council.

"Dubliners take great pride in their City and it is important that the minority who seek to damage that reputation by dumping on our streets are vigorously pursued by our Enforcement Teams under these and other powers available to the Council," he concluded.

Some of the other main provisions include:

• Waste Operators will only be able to collect waste in defined areas on a designated day. This day will be determined by Dublin City Council. This provision will come in to effect over the coming months.

• All householders and businesses must be provided with and use an organic waste collection service (brown bin).

• Waste collection times will be from 6am to 9pm (8am to 8pm weekends and Bank Holidays) with the exception of the City Centre Commercial District where collections will be restricted to 7pm to midnight.

• Customers and waste collectors must be clearly identified on waste containers including bags.
