The Garda Divisional Crime Task Force and Bord Gáis Networks are warning people not to tamper with their gas meters.
A scam has been uncovered where the gas meter is by-passed, and it involves criminal damage to the meter and poses a potential safety risk.
A man in his 30's was arrested on Tuesday after houses in the greater Dublin area were found to have their gas supply tampered with.
He has since been released, however a file is being prepared for the DPP.
As part of the investigation Gardaí believe a further 200 premises may have had their gas supply tampered with in this way.
John Memery, Service Delivery Manager at Bord Gáis Networks said: "Public safety is the main priority for us at Bord Gáis Networks. We have seen an increase in the prevalence of gas meter tampering throughout the country through an increase in detection of meter tampering and increasing numbers of tip-offs from members of the public."
