Call For Commitment To Build School In Kanturk

Fianna Fáil TD for Cork North West, Michael Moynihan, says there must be a definite commitment by the Government to ensure the long awaited construction of an amalgamated primary school in Kanturk.

Deputy Moynihan was speaking after raising a special Dáil debate on the need for a new building for the amalgamated St Colman's Boys National School and the Covent Girls National School.

Mr Moynihan said: "The parents and management of both schools have been waiting for over 10 years for the new school building. Planning permission for the new 24 classroom building in Kanturk was rejected by Cork County Council earlier this year.


"I have now called on the Department of Education to convene a meeting with the OPW, Cork County Council and the two Boards of Management to discuss the best way forward for the new school, which was committed to today.

"Minister for Education, Ruairí Quinn must confirm his full commitment to ensuring this project comes to fruition. The meeting between all the relevant stakeholders must be convened as a matter of urgency.

"The people of Kanturk have been waiting over a decade for a new school and there needs to be a roadmap set out for this to be become a reality."
